Tool #2 Self-Editing...

It's important to build a personal learning network so that you can come into contact with new ideas. Many times we are so engrossed in our daily lives and our jobs that it makes it difficult to engage in meaningful conversation. Online communities can help in that they provide a way to communicate that does not have to be immediate and can be done when it is convenient. It also allows us all to express our different points of view on a subject.
An online community also helps me self-edit. I don't know about you, but the best thing about writing something down and then being able to edit and make sure that my point is coming across clear and precise is important to me. Many times I say the wrong thing or, if I am upset, I don't allow myself the opportunity to take a step back and consider the other person's side. Being a part of an online community allows me the advantage of reading their ideas, soaking it in, and then formulating my own thought and view.
The point that I found most meaningful from Vicki is that in order to write a meaningful comment then you need to show the blogger that you hear them. As in all other aspects of our lives, people deserve the respect of having their voices heard. It is important, if you want to have a meaningful discussion, to understand the side of the other person and this cannot be accomplished if you are not listening to what they are saying.
I chose Esther Gaytan's blog to comment she had a great idea of using blogs so students can communicate with each other. Next I commented on kristigirl's musiciselementary blog because she expressed my frustration at having so many usernames and passwords. Some of the other posts I commented on also shared their frustration and joy at beginning this new journey together.

  1. I love the fact that I can come home after work, rest a bit and then get online, connect and learn from others. The interactive werb is powerful!

I haven't been very good about giving back to the community, but that is my goal for this year!

  2. I agree... it can be quite helpful when you can access resources from an online community at any time of the day.
